Rough Diamond Grading and Evaluation Course

(Duration: 2 weeks)

Course Objectives

To prepare the student to become proficient in every technique involved in the manufacture and grading of diamonds

To teach the student how to sort and evaluate diamonds both in the rough and polished state and how color, imperfection, shape and proportions affect prices

Course Outline
  • How to use a loupe correctly
  • Gem and near gem
  • Different quality shapes colour sizing and sieving
  • Great precision of what is SAWABLE, MAKEABLES, MACCLES, CLIVAGE, REJECTIONS, FLATS and BOART with its qualities and colours
  • Cullinan ? De Beers mine ? surface ? underground tour
  • Visits to various alluvial diggings
  • How to use the Rapaport Diamond Price List. And the international diamond price structure.
  • How to look for and identify the grain in a sawed (four point) diamond
  • How to look for and identify the crystal symmetry, axis, plane, form and habit of diamond crystals
  • Moissanite identification
  • The study of impurity centres in rough diamond crystals, their cause and effect
  • How to select diamonds for fancy shapes, determining their ultimate form when in the rough
  • How to determine colour in diamonds, both natural and artificial, and its effect on buying and selling
  • How to select rough diamonds for purity, colour, size, shape and unusual qualities
  • How to determine whether a whole rough diamond is to be cleaved, sawed or remain whole
  • The process used in cutting and shaping elliptical diamonds such as , ovals,marquises pear shaped diamonds, etc

Commencement The Rough Diamond Evaluation and Grading Courses will be run as follows:
  • Johannesburg,South Africa:Next Course commences 28 July 2014 and every second Monday thereafter for the duration of the academic year

(Duration: 5 days)

Diamond Cutting and Polishing Course

Diamond Cutting and Polishing Course

(Duration: 6 months or 3 months intensive)

Course Objectives

The full diamond graduation program consists of 6 months training which can be broken up into terms of 3-month periods of which your company can determine if the full program must be done con currently or with intervals in between to allow your staff to return to your place of business and then return to us for continuance of the education process until the program has been fully completed.

  • If one single student completes the full graduate program a discounted price of US$ 5000.00 be applicable to that student. A booking fee off 50% of the course fees will be asked in advance which will be deducted from the total costs and the balance will be payable on commencement of the courses
Certification
  • After completion of each course the students will receive a certificate of completion. To gain a full graduated Diploma, all of the courses must be completed with a pass rate of not less than 85%.

Course Objectives

To prepare individuals for mining companies or private students who want to work as sorters or evaluators for large mining companies like MIBA or ENDIAMA.

Course Outline
  • Focus on types of IND diamonds and near gems
  • Management of large shipments
  • How to identify diamonds
  • Sieving and grading sizes
  • Looking at RAP sheet for larger stones (example: stones larger than 20 carats rough and Rap+6Ct)
  • How to evaluate rough stone with fluorescence
  • Business principles in industry
  • Buying and selling and legalities (half day)
  • Grading of near gems. (Coated and frosted)
  • How to use sieves
  • Identification of clouded stone
  • Melees.
  • How to draw up a manifest for large consignment of diamond.
